Help to alleviate poverty in Tanzania by joining Village Africa’s child sponsorship scheme, which also includes important support for the child’s community.
Village Africa runs a child sponsorship scheme for both primary and secondary students. The scheme prioritises orphans, children with single parents and those in greatest need.
Sponsors can choose whether to support a primary or secondary school student. They can also choose whether to sponsor a boy or a girl.
It costs £15 per month to sponsor a primary school pupil. The child is provided with gifts including school uniform, school bag, school stationery, a mosquito net, a blanket and a hygiene set. Gifts provided to these children are made locally whenever possible, eg school skirts, shirts, shorts and sweaters.
It costs £20 per month to sponsor a secondary school student. This includes rent and an allowance to cover school uniform, books and school stationery.
You will receive a photo of the child, letters (or drawings if the child is very young) and an annual progress report.
The scheme started in 2007 with primary school pupils and has grown steadily and is particularly popular with past volunteers who have seen the need for themselves. Many have recommended the scheme to their friends and families too.

Having spent three months working as a teacher for Village Africa, I have seen the conditions many of these youngsters have to cope with. I also know how my money is spent each month and how much it will help the children and the charity. There’s nothing quite like getting a letter in the post, full of colourful drawings, from ‘your’ child, to put all of your problems into perspective, and a smile on your face for the rest of day. The child sponsorship scheme is known as the ‘Simba Club’ in Tanzania. ‘Simba’ means ‘lion’ in Kiswahili. Lions are found in the Serengeti and other national parks in Tanzania and are popular with Africans as well as people overseas.

Community Fund
Besides sponsoring an individual child, the scheme also has a Community Fund which helps the whole community. This fund has been used for many projects including school classrooms (renovation and new build). Classroom repairs and school toilets are urgently needed.
Primary School Child Sponsorship Scheme – 50% of your £15 donation will go towards the Village Africa Community Fund that will benefit all the children in the local community. The 50% split is approximate due to significant exchange rate fluctuations and inflation in Tanzania.
Secondary School Student Sponsorship Scheme – £5 of your £20 donation will go towards the Village Africa Community Fund that will benefit all the children in the local community.
Unless the wish to sponsor more than one child is specified, surplus funds will be put into the Village Africa Community Fund to benefit the whole community.
Further Education
After secondary school most sponsored students who pass go on to either vocational training, college or university. With these qualifications, it is much easier for them to get jobs. Whilst this means they need to work in the cities, they send money home and usually build a new house for their family, stimulating the local economy.
For vocational training and most college courses, we ask sponsors to continue supporting their student at the same level (ie £20 a month). University degrees (and some college courses) are much more expensive and the students need up to £100 a month sponsorship. A few very generous sponsors agree to increase their donation to meet the full cost of this. However, in most cases we appeal for new donors and put together a group of sponsors to support the student.

Gift Aid
If you are a UK taxpayer, please boost your donation by 25p of Gift Aid for every £1 you donate by ticking the ‘Gift Aid’ box. Gift Aid is reclaimed by Village Africa, at no cost to you, from the tax you pay for the current tax year. To do this, we need your full address, including postcode.
