Emergency trips to hospital are provided to villagers, day and night, free of charge. It is a 3 hour drive on rough terrain and a four-wheel drive vehicle is necessary. It is a 2 day walk to hospital otherwise. Within its short history, Village Africa has greatly reduced the death rate. Common problems are malaria, pneumonia and complications in childbirth. Many of the patients are babies, children, pregnant women and the elderly. The ambulance service covers Yamba, Milingano and Makanya (a population of 7000 people).
